NCS is pleased to announce the continuation of our new Trainee Webinar Series. This live webinar series aims to help prepare all neurocritical care providers - from APPs to pharmacists to physicians - for the transition to independent practice.

Every other month we will invite various guest speakers and panelists to address common issues within critical care practice, along with strategies to manage them.

Our third webinar will focus on dealing with challenging patients and their caregivers. Attendees will learn how to examine the framework for different scenarios and we hope to go over specific cases to help establish ways to provide optimal care in challenging circumstances.

Angela Hays Shapshak, MD

Dr. Angela Hays Shapshak is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Anesthesiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she serves as the Director of the Neurocritical Care Fellowship program as well as the Associate Director of the Neurology Residency Program. Over the past decade, Dr. Hays Shapshak has served in several leadership roles at local and national levels. She is the current Chair of the Neurocritical Care Training Committee, as well as the immediate past chair of the Fellowship Directors’ Section. In addition, she serves as the neurocritical care specialty representative to the board of directors for the United Council of Neurological Subspecialties.
Jessica McFarlin, MD

Jessica McFarlin, MD is the Chief of the University of Kentucky Division of Palliative and Supportive Care in the Department of Internal Medicine and Associate Professor of Neurology. She received her medical degree from the University of Kentucky. Jessica then completed her residency and dual fellowship training at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. She is board certified in Neuro Critical Care by the United Council of Neurological Subspecialties. She is board certified in Neurology and Hospice and Palliative Medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Her primary research focus is in communication around serious illnesses and in the delivery of high quality palliative care in patients in the intensive care setting. She is a senior faculty member for Vital Talk a 501c3 non profit that teaches evidence based serious illness communication skills to healthcare providers. Jessica enjoys live music, sunglasses and other people’s dogs.
Wendy Walters, LICSW, HEC-C

Wendy Walters, LICSW, HEC-C has been in direct clinical practice for over 30 years, with the bulk of that experience in end-of-life care. She joined the UAB Hospital Ethics Committee in 2009 and began taking ethics consults for the hospital, ultimately returning to graduate school at Albany Medical School’s Alden March Bioethics Institute. Wendy has been in a full-time ethics consultant role since 2016.
