The design of masonry walls for in-plane and out-of-plane loads using the strength design provisions of TMS 402-16 will be discussed. Rules of thumb for initial proportioning of masonry walls will be shared, the strength design provisions will be reviewed, and some new and lesser used provisions that can allow for more efficient wall designs will be highlighted. Recommendations for the design and detailing of shear walls with openings will conclude the presentation.
