This presentation covers design of structures for tsunamis, specifically the new provisions in ASCE 7-16 being adopted as part of the 2018 IBC. In 2011, ASCE commissioned a subcommittee to begin putting together a set of provisions to be included in ASCE 7. The result is the new Chapter 6 for the 2016 edition of ASCE 7. These provisions will contain requirements that will be very different than other loading requirements such as wind or seismic. The presentation will cover a brief tsunami background and lessons learned from the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami. The bulk of the presentation will cover the new ASCE 7 tsunami provisions and the end will cover the first two projects in the United States design for tsunamis that were designed based on the ASCE 7-16 provisions.
