February 11 - Buckling Restrained Braced Frame

Description

This presentation will address steel seismic design in accordance with the 2018 IBC. Specifically, it will review the Buckling Restrained Braced Frame design example in Volume 4 of the 2018 IBC Structural/Seismic Design Manual. The authors will present the basic code provisions for Buckling Restrained Braces and illustrate through the example how a building can be designed to adhere to those provisions. Specific requirements for conformance demonstration through testing will also be addressed.

    Anindya Dutta, PhD, S.E., has provided analysis and design of a variety structures in high seismic zones. Dr. Dutta’s experience also includes seismic evaluation and strengthening of low to high rise structures. He has taught graduate and undergraduate level courses on concrete design and structural analysis at the State University of New York at Buffalo and is a regular lecturer at the San Francisco State University’s graduate program. He has authored a number of technical reports and journal papers as well as served as a member of the review board for ASCE’s Structural Engineering Journal.

  • Kenneth Tam, S.E.

    Kenneth Tam. S.E., is a Senior Project Manager at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger in San Francisco. With over 20 years of experience, he specializes in the structural design, evaluation, and seismic retrofit of wood, steel, and reinforced concrete buildings. He has been involved in projects using buckling restrained braces for new construction as well as for retrofit application in the US and New Zealand. He has authored technical papers published in AISC Engineering Journal and the Bulletin of the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering. He has also served on various sub-committees ASCE 41.
