CLT Diaphragm Design: New Code Provisions and Design Examples

The use of cross-laminated timber (CLT) as structural floor and roof panels has seen incredible growth in the US over the past decade. However, its use as part of a seismic and wind force-resisting system—either as a diaphragm or shear wall—has not been codified to date. This has resulted in designing CLT diaphragms through alternative means or using a structural topping, such as a layer of wood structural panels or concrete, as the diaphragm. This webinar will introduce new provisions for CLT diaphragm design, in the recently published American Wood Council’s 2021 Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS), which is referenced from the IBC 2021. Following a discussion of the new SDPWS provisions, CLT diaphragm detailing options and design examples will be presented in order to apply practical design techniques and discuss structural detailing challenges and solutions.

  • Scott Breneman, PhD, P.E., S.E.

    Dr. Breneman is a licensed Structural Engineer and Professional Engineer in the State of California, a PE in the State of Washington, and Senior Technical Director – Mass Timber Program Manager in the Project Resources & Solutions Division of WoodWorks. He received bachelor’s and master’s from the University of Florida and a doctorate from Stanford University. Scott has experience with structural design, seismic rehabilitation, and peer review of projects varying from single-family homes to high-rise hospitals. He is Past-President of the Structural Engineers Association of Central California, an associate member of the seismic subcommittee of ASCE 7 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, and a member of the PRG 320 CLT product standard committee. At WoodWorks, he provides project support and education to individuals designing wood buildings and oversees the development of technical educational content.

  • Michelle Kam-Biron, P.E., S.E.

    Michelle Kam-Biron is a California licensed structural engineer and recently joined Boise Cascade where she will utilize her Mass Timber experience as Commercial Business Development Manager. Her mass timber experience includes working as a Mass Timber Specialist at Structurlam, a mass timber manufacturer, Vice President of Education with American Wood Council (AWC) and Senior Director with WoodWorks. Prior to joining the wood industry, Ms. Kam-Biron has several years of experience as a consulting Structural Engineer. She currently volunteers her time on NCSEA, SEAOSC and ASCE-SEI committees in addition to being a Past-President of SEAOSC. Recently, she has received the Susan M. Frey NCSEA Educator Award and was inducted into the SEAOC College of Fellows.

Webinar Cancellation

By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.

By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email ( ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line "NCSEA Webinar Cancellation" and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.

If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:
  • Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)
  • Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.

If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
