Anyone who has spent any amount of time in the drilling industry has had problems with reactive clay and shale. We have learned it will swell, cave, be sticky, cause bit balling and mud rings. These problems all cause a loss in penetration rates, production, and efficiency. During this presentation we will give suggestions on how to solve some of these problems as you adapt them to your own personal experiences. We will discuss testing, use of polymers, and better drilling practices to increase your success.
