Being a Lawyer Should Not Hurt! (2022)

Sarah Armstrong, Pamela Moore, and William Slease discuss the impact of carrying the emotional burdens of work, family life, and compassion fatigue. They also discuss the importance of setting boundaries and practicing self-care, as well as steps to take to alleviate stress, and ways to set boundaries.

Speakers:
Sarah Armstrong is a native New Mexican who completed her bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico in Journalism & Mass Communication in 2001. After obtaining her law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., Sarah returned to Albuquerque and was sworn in as member of the New Mexico Bar in 2004. She practices state-wide in New Mexico exclusively in the areas of family law and domestic relations, including: divorce, custody, visitation, adoption, child support, spousal support and complex property division. Since then, she has completed more than 100 hours of training in alternative dispute resolution and has been formally trained in Collaborative Divorce since 2013. Sarah has been active in providing legal education to family law practitioners and is currently the chair-elect of the family law section of the State Bar of New Mexico.

Pamela Moore currently serves as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and Director of the State Bar of New Mexico’s Professional Programs Group where she educates the legal community on positive health and well-being and assists in providing resources and services to any legal professional struggling with mental, emotional or behavioral issues. Ms. Moore served as an advisory member to the National Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs in 2019 and 2020 and is a current member of the Institute for Well Being In Law. Ms. Moore’s professional career includes a BS in Industrial Engineering, Masters Certificate in Human Resources Management, Masters in Counseling, license as a Professional Clinical Counselor, and she is on track to become a Professional Certified Coach by the end of 2022. She has over 10 years of study and experience in self-care and is passionate about assisting, guiding and supporting those that seek to get curious about their life and invite change.

William Slease is the Professional Development Program Director for the State Bar of New Mexico. In addition to his duties at the State Bar, he serves as an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico School of Law where he teaches Ethics, 1L Lab, and serves as a practice skills evaluator for the evidence-trial practice skills course. He formerly served as the Chief Disciplinary Counsel for the New Mexico Supreme Court Disciplinary Board. He is a member of and former President of the National Organization of Bar Counsel, and a former Co-Chair of the National Task Force for Lawyer Well-being. Prior to his work in the public service sector, he was in private practice with an emphasis in civil rights, employment and tort litigation.
