Interdisciplinary Approach to Iron Deficiency and Iron Deficiency Anemia: Disparities in Diagnosis, Screening, and Treatment particularly in Women of Color or in Minority Groups

Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common and widespread nutritional disorder in the world. In the US, ~ 50% of women overall and up to 90% of pregnant women, especially minority and poorer women have ID or IDA, both have potentially serious negative impacts across all of Women’s Health from adolescence to post-menopausal. Newer data and discussions rightfully highlight the continued use of outdated guidelines, guidance, and treatment for ID with or without anemia in Women’s Health.

Dr. Wendy Wright and Dr. Lisa Gittens-Williams will review and discuss current data and key points in diagnosing and treating all women with ID/IDA, pointing out the continued disparities that exist across this patient population; and they will incorporate a few real-life cases of how to work from an interdisciplinary approach. Dr. Gittens-Williams will provide a brief overview of ID/IDA and disparities in diagnosing, screening, and treatment in women of color or in minority groups. Dr. Wright will review top line data from pivotal studies, highlighting the efficacy and tolerability of ferric maltol for the treatment of ID with or without anemia. At the conclusion of presentations, there will be a live Q&A discussion with the panel, moderated by Michael Cody, MD, Shield Therapeutics.
