Ophthalmology surgical procedures are often performed on higher risk patients with chronically painful sensory input, many emergent. Basic anesthesia supportive care techniques, nuances of drug selection, intubation, and recovery will be covered in an effort to promote protection of entire body (not just ocular structures) and improvement in postoperative recovery. Brachycephalic patients, older feline patients, diabetics, aggressive animals all layer issues on top of unique intubations, increased intracranial and intraocular pressure, severe pain and need for complete paralysis. All will be discussed and solutions presented.
