Attendees should gain a better understanding of acute or surgical pain mechanisms, recognition, differentials for common intraoperative clinical sign and vital parameter changes, and treatments. Premedications, intraoperative rescues, locoregional blocks, and postoperative suggestions are offered for common daily elective and emergent case management. A large part of successful operative management of pain is appropriate premedication, use of nonsteroidals and steroids, locoregional blocks and basic perioperative care. Basic local blocks and epidurals will be discussed in the context of this presentation. Continuous rate infusions will be mentioned but not discussed in length. With this info, the practitioner, whether generalist or specialist, should feel more confident in a balanced approach to pain control for everyday and emergent surgeries.
