Summary: This lecture will look at the history of crystalloid and colloid use. We will examine the pros and cons of each fluid, what are the indications and contraindications for certain disease states and the pitfalls of each fluid type. The lecture will include calculations for shock fluid bolus rates, maintenance fluid rates and how to calculate dehydration and free water loss deficits. Consensus statements on fluid replacements in human and veterinary medicine will also be reviewed.
