Summary: Otitis externa is one of the leading reasons for owners to seek veterinary case. Although a common problem, otitis can be a frustrating and expensive disease to treat. This lecture will present the "three-legged stool" approach to otitis diagnosis and management, focusing on primary, predisposing, and perpetuating factors, and diagnosis and treatment of each. A major focus will be given to idenitication of underlying causes of otitis and what diagnostic testing may be appropriate. Additional focus will be paid to antimicrobial selection, in both active ingredient and product formulation. Participants will also learn strategies for managing chronic and severe otitis externa. Finally, recognition, treatment, and common treatment pitfalls for otitis media will be discussed.
