This pain management course is designed for veterinary technicians wishing to broaden their education on integral pain management options. The lecture will cover patient pain identification, pharmaceutical pain management options, non- pharmaceutical therapies, and alternative modalities. New pain management drugs and their applications will also be discussed

Learning Objectives:

1.Learn how pain happens from a physiological approach
2.Identify patient pain and how to apply a pain score using the Colorado pain scale
3.Describe drug classes utilized for pain management and provide a multi-modal approach
4.Understand non-pharmaceutical pain management options

Qualifications and ExperiencE:

Mylissa obtained her Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology from SUNY Canton in 2004 and received her Veterinary Technology license in 2005. In 2007 Mylissa obtained her Bachelor of Arts with a Biology major and a Business Administration minor from SUNY Albany. Before joining Upstate Veterinary Specialties, Mylissa was the lead veterinary technician for an emergency and specialty hospital in Upstate NY for 17 years. While working full-time, she strived to serve herself and her patients better and obtained her Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner (CVPP) certification in 2015 and her Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Emergency and Critical Care in 2018. Mylissa enjoys teaching and was recognized as the top presenter at the 2018 IVECCS Conference for her IVAPM Case Report, "Managing OA After an Acute ITP Event." In her spare time, she loves working on various art projects, hiking with her dogs, and spending time with her daughter and husband.
