Uh-oh…It Went Neuro: Triaging the Acute Neurologic Patient

This lecture is geared toward primary care veterinarians and will cover recognizing the three most common neurologic emergencies, triaging the severity, and performing an initial neurologic evaluation. The lecture will include initiating a minimum database and basic diagnostic work-up, providing first responder-type therapeutic interventions, and knowing if/when to refer.

Learning Objectives:

1. Triage and stabilize a patient with cluster seizures or status epilepticus
2. Triage and stabilize a patient with acute spinal cord injury (ASCI)
3. Triage and stabilize a patient with acute vestibular dysfunction

Qualifications and Experience

Dr. Todd Bishop is a native of the mid-Hudson Valley, obtained his veterinary degree with distinction from Cornell University in 2003, and was the recipient of a number of awards recognizing his commitment and achievements during his academic training. He did his rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received additional recognition for excellence in teaching.

After the internship Todd entered private practice, working as an associate in a small animal hospital in Rochester, NY before continuing his training with a Neurology internship at the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in central New Jersey. Todd stayed on at Red Bank for a 3-year Neurology and Neurosurgery residency that culminated in board certification in the specialty of Neurology by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in July, 2009. Todd has practiced neurology and neurosurgery since 2005. He has been treating the neurologic disorders of pets in the Capital District since 2009. During his time at UVS, he has taken the Advanced Spinal Surgery Course at Iowa State University and has obtained certification in Advanced Techniques in Neurosurgery with ACVIM Neurology.

His particular areas of interest include: inflammatory brain diseases (encephalitis), vascular disease (stroke) and all aspects of spinal surgery. However, at the end of the day, what he enjoys most is helping clients with very sick pets live longer, happier and healthier lives.
