This lecture will review emergency management of seizures, the goals in managing epilepsy, and available treatment options.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Understand when to initiate anticonvulsant therapy.
2. Have a framework for treating seizures in the emergent setting.
3. Understand the effectiveness and side effects of anticonvulsant drug options.
4. Appreciate comorbidities associated with epilepsy and how that impacts management options.

Qualifications and Experience:

Dr. Laura Krzykowski is a native of the Capital District, born and raised in Delmar, NY. She attended The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA for her undergraduate degree in biology; and in 2013 obtained her DVM from Michigan State University, graduating with high honors. She then pursued a medicine and surgery rotating internship through BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Tampa, FL.
Laura completed her residency in Neurology and Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania in 2017. There she performed ventral slot procedures, hemilaminectomies, and craniotomies; as well as provided lab and lecture opportunities for pre-clinical students through the Neurology and ACVIM clubs. Dr. Krzykowski obtained her board certification as a Diplomate of the College of Neurology within the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2017. Dr. Krzykowski is the Chief of Service for the Neurology Department.

Prior to joining Upstate Veterinary Specialties in 2018, Dr. Krzykowski was the sole Neurologist/Neurosurgeon at Veterinary Specialists of Connecticut in West Hartford. She treated the entire medical and surgical neurologic caseload; as well as provided neurology support and telemedicine consults for surrounding hospitals and continuing education for the veterinary community.

Laura has lived in several areas throughout the United States during her education and training and is excited to be back in the Capital District with her family. During her spare time, she enjoys traveling, swimming, and skiing. Laura has a cat named Daenerys.
