3rd Annual NYU Langone Health Oncology Rehabilitation Summit: State-of-the-Art Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant On-Demand

Rusk Rehabilitation

Course Description
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is considered standard of care for malignant and nonmalignant hematologic diseases. Due to improvements in patient screening, procedures, and supportive therapies, survival rates are improving. Despite these advancements, the treatment is extremely grueling and there are significant treatment related side effects which include: reduced physical performance and fitness, fatigue, diminished psychologic well-being and reduced quality of life. Therefore, timely recognition and intervention of these treatment side effects is essential to optimize function and health related quality of life in all people living with and beyond with hematologic disease.

This course aims to provide the latest evidence on the pathology and treatment of hematologic disease including HSCT. It will also highlight the value of prehabilitative programs, early identification of functional impairment, and the latest rehabilitation strategies and techniques specifically focused on optimizing quality of life and function. Last, it will describe how to develop and implement a standardized evidence based comprehensive exercise program for patients undergoing HSCT at all phases of care (i.e., pre-transplant, during transplantation, post-transplantation).
