Recorded Webinar- Legacy of Trauma: The African American Experience

This training will explore the link between intergenerational and current trauma related to individuals and communities that interface with the many social service systems. Participants will understand the connection between developmental trauma and contemporary challenges in the African Americans involved in the systems. We will explore our experiences, perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors that may challenge constructive relationship development. We will discuss practical, culturally Intelligent, trauma-responsive strategies to keep our work moving forward in mediation, pro-social activities, and service delivery.

Objectives Include:

-The participants will learn how to modify their work to understand individuals and their adaptive response(s) to environmental circumstances and toxic stress.
-The participants will understand how African American historical trauma impacts from childhood, adolescents, through adulthood.
-The participants will identify methods practitioners, providers, and mediators can build meaningful connections with African American adolescents and community members.
-The participants will identify life skills and daily functioning for practitioners, providers, and mediators to have impactful connections with African American adolescents.

Brandon Jones, MA, CPP

Brandon is the Minnesota Association for Children’s Mental Health Executive Director. He has a consulting and training background in addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), Historical and Intergenerational trauma, Social/Emotional Intelligence (EQ), Leadership, and Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI). Brandon holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Minnesota, a master's in Community Psychology from Metropolitan State University, and a master's in Psychotherapy (MFT) from Adler Graduate School. Brandon is also a 2013 Bush Foundation Leadership Fellow. Today, he provides the MACMH staff and board with the leadership and vision necessary to keep MACMH at the forefront of Mental Health education and advocacy. He lives by the motto of “Live life with Purpose on Purpose.”
