This workshop covers and expands on material from Dr. Kane's award winning book: Walk with Me: Stories of Black Men's Resilience and Well-Being through Twin-Pandemics. These 3 hours are designed to cover topics of systemic racism, social justice as a counselor, and what it looks like to walk with African American/Black clients in their process of resilience and or resistance building. As well as, what it looks like for us to challenge ourselves in, and outside, the counseling setting to serve as support in the process of undoing harmful structures and the narratives that were established as a result.

Objectives include:

1. Increased understanding of Black men's resilience and well-being.
2. Understanding historical and contemporary systemic racism on Black men and society.
3. Clinical (and everyday) implications on misconstrued moderatism.

This course meets criteria for 3 hours of ethics continuing education by the Oklahoma Board of Behavioral Health for Oklahoma LPC and LMFT license holders, by the Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers (provider #20230088) for Oklahoma LCSW license holders, by the Oklahoma Board of Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselors (certificate #20240018) for LADC and CADC license holders (3 hours ethics CEUs), and for Oklahoma case managers (3 hours ethics or strength-based CEUs).

A therapist, scholar, researcher, educator, and advocate. Or, on the surface, a young Black man usually spotted with a slight smile and funky head nod that runs a tightrope to any beat between Kendrick Lamar and Isaac Hayes. Who am I? A child born to two parents, who, not without scars, climbed up from poverty and oppression in the unforgiving streets of Baltimore, Maryland. A man whose parents hoped for him the privilege of dreaming. Now a doctor… aspirationally chanting the words of Ms. Angelou, “I am the dream and the hope of the slave.”

My heart’s intent is to find words for those with open ears to perceive world sound. For me, building compassionate community necessitates challenging systems. In doing so, I continually aspire to a life that possesses the properties of water: taking any form to reach all places, it may be soft and refreshing or ferocious and unrelenting.

I have worked with adults, adolescents, and children, using individual, couple, family, or group therapy. Additionally, I have an intentionally diversified clinical experience that includes private practice, college counseling centers, Veteran Affairs (VA), community advocacy, and incarceration centers. As a result, I’m experienced in working with a multitude of concerns such as: anxiety, depression, OCD, grief, alcohol and drug, trauma, phase of life difficulty, life transitions, self-esteem, identity transition/development, relationship difficulty, family concerns, and premarital therapy.

I received my PhD from the University of Kansas and completed my Doctoral Internship at Vanderbilt University. My professional time is spent doing private practice, consultation, and mental health programming for various systems. I have published and presented papers and a book on topics of identity, systems, men, masculinity, and compassion, as well as the socio-political influence on our human experience.
