What Can Providers Do to Overcome Disparities
While the health of Americans overall has improved dramatically over the last century, these gains have not been shared equally, with racial and ethnic minorities continuing to have worse health outcomes. Examples of this include higher rates of hypertension, myocardial infarctions, strokes, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease and lower life expectancy seen in black individuals, and the increased rates of diabetes and infant mortality rate seen in Native Americans.
Education on healthcare disparities has focused on statistics and awareness. To address this issue effectively, the program Eliminating Disparities in Healthcare: What Can You Do? will provide physicians with an understanding of the causes of healthcare disparity and tools to help achieve healthcare equity.

Rachel M. Bond, MD, FACC is a board-certified attending cardiologist who has devoted her career to the treatment of heart disease through early detection, education, and prevention. She is the system-wide Medical Director of Women’s Heart Health at Dignity Health, in Arizona. Dr. Bond is the Co-chair of the Women in Cardiology Committee, as well as Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee for the Arizona Chapter of the American College of Cardiology. She holds a faculty position as Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at Creighton University School of Medicine. She sits on the leadership council of the Women in Cardiology section of the American College of Cardiology nationally.
Dr. Bond earned a bachelor of science degree from the seven-year accelerated medical program at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and earned her medical doctorate from NYU School of Medicine. She completed her training in internal medicine at NYU School of Medicine and in cardiovascular disease at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New York.
Dr. Bond is the author of several review papers referencing sex and gender differences and cardiovascular conditions that predominantly affect women, along with opinion pieces aimed at addressing health equity, reducing health disparities, and promoting the professional development of women and minorities in the health-science profession. She has a passion for advocacy of education and mentorship and has advised as an expert source through news and media outlets. Her clinical interests include heart-disease prevention, the non-invasive evaluation and treatment of heart disease, pregnancy-related heart conditions, and cardio-oncology and lipid disorders. Her research interests currently include the heart-mind connection and cardio-rheumatology.
Dr. Bond is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American Society for Preventive Cardiology, Association of Black Cardiologists, and the American Heart Association, where she is a national spokesperson for the “Go Red for Women” campaign and sits on the board of directors.

Keith C. Ferdinand, MD, FACC, FAHA, FNLA, FASH is Professor of Medicine and Gerald S. Berenson Endowed Chair in Preventive Cardiology at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, LA. He received his medical degree from the Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC and is board-certified in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease, certified in the subspecialty of nuclear cardiology, and is a specialist in clinical hypertension.
Dr. Ferdinand is past Chair of the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention and prior Chief Science Officer and Chair of the Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC). He lectures nationally and internationally and has conducted numerous trials in cardiovascular disease, lipids, and cardiometabolic risk, especially in racial/ethnic minorities. Dr. Ferdinand’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Journal of Clinical Hypertension, American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs, Clinical Lipidology, Cardiorenal Medicine, and Hypertension.
In 2004, Dr. Ferdinand received the Louis B. Russell, Jr. Memorial Award of the American Heart Association. In 2010, he received an award from the Congressional Black Caucus Health Trust for Journalism, as well as the Charles Drew Award for Medical Excellence from the National Minority Quality Foundation. In 2015, Dr. Ferdinand was inducted into the Association of University Cardiologists. He was awarded the Wenger Award for Medical Leadership in 2017 by WomenHeart and the 2017 ABC Spirit of the Heart Distinguished Leadership Award. Most recently, he was the 2019 Xavier University recipient of the Champion Award for health equity.

- Identify social determinants of health that may place patients at risk for poor outcomes
- Use available resources to assist at-risk patients to improve health outcomes

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARTICIPANTS AND OBTAINING CME CREDIT
There is no fee for this activity. To receive credit, participants must register, view the live CME activity in its entirety, and then complete the post-test, with a score of 75% or better, and evaluation. The estimated time for completion of this activity is one hour. To receive a certificate, participants must demonstrate mastery of the presented material via the post-test. Participants are allowed to take the post-test multiple times.
If you will be watching the webinar in a group setting, please note all group participants will need to register individually in order to complete the post-test and evaluation to receive credit.
