In addition to the business portion of the meeting, there will be a professional development part called “Show me the money: Raising money for your archives from the licensing of archival materials.”

Could your archive use extra money for supplies, collections, or programs? The licensing of archival materials can be a significant source of funding. This session will help archivists learn about the licensing of archival materials, particularly photos and moving images. They will also explain how a rate card (also called a fee schedule) works and how to set yours up.

Take the money and run: An overview of the licensing of archival materials
Mott Linn, CA, recently retired as the Chief Librarian of the National Security Research Center at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which is one of the largest archives in the U.S. During his career, he held three positions that included significant amounts of licensing archival materials. Foremost amongst these, he was in charge of the National Hockey League’s moving image archives, during which time he helped fulfill millions of dollars’ worth of licensing agreements. In addition, he is a Certified Archivist and the Academy of Certified Archivists honored him with the 2018 Distinguished Service Award.

“More bang for their buck”: Photograph licensing, user management and collection development
Gerald Chaudron, CA, is head of Special Collections at the University of Memphis Libraries. He holds a PhD in History from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, a MLIS from Louisiana State University, and is a Certified Archivist. His department has two large newspaper photograph collections and he established licensing agreements for photographs, as well as video and audio, which have earned the department thousands of dollars over the past six years.

From Repository to Silver Screen: Building a Moving Image Licensing Practice
Alan Munshower, CA, currently serves as the Digital Collections Archivist at Virginia Tech Special Collections and University Archives. He previously was the Audio-Visual Curator at the University of Mississippi Archives and Special Collections, where he managed licensing of photographs and moving images. Alan was the Chair of the Copyright Committee for the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA) from 2018-2020, and is now the Technical Coordinator for the Meetings Coordinating Committee of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC). A Certified Archivist and graduate of the MLS program at the University of Maryland, his research interests include copyright, archival practice, music communities, and the American South.
