SFPE 2025 Pre-Conference Seminar: Sprinkler Design for Engineers
Upcoming In-Person Seminar: October 20th - 21st from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Registered Conference Attendees: Please check your conference registration email for $100 OFF discount code towards seminar registration
Course Description
This two-day course is based on NFPA 13 and 20 standards. The course is designed to provide participants with the tools needed to design and install fire sprinkler systems in accordance with building and fire codes. The course covers introductory aspects that are essential for engineers who are new to sprinkler system design, classification of the hazards and commodities to be protected, confirmation of the hydraulic date and preliminary hydraulic design, and preparation of design documentation. In addition, more advanced topics such as application of new technologies, protection of high-piled storage, and computer generated hydraulic calculations is also included.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Use hazard classifications to design sprinkler systems
- Select the most suitable type of system for your project
- Develop system design criteria using hydraulic calculations
- Describe sprinkler vs. non sprinkler system requirements
- Distinguish the suitability of different types of sprinkler systems to certain hazards and construction components
- Understand water system implications for sprinkler system and fire protection design
- Illustrate combining fire pumps and water supplies
- Know how to hydraulically calculate pipe sizes
Instructors
Scott A. Futrell, PE, FSFPE
Kevin Hall, M.Eng., PE
Scott Futrell has provided services related to fire code consulting, project management, fire protection system design, and loss investigation of fire protection systems for a broad range of building types and system failures since 1989. He is a Fire Protection Engineer registered in the State of Wisconsin and has been in the Fire Protection industry since 1975 (between 1975 and 1989 designing and project managing fire sprinkler systems). Mr. Futrell is a Fellow in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, a Certified Fire Protection Specialist, a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator, a Senior Engineering Technician (NICET IV), and a Certified Water-Based Systems Designer. Mr. Futrell is a principal member of the NFPA 25 and NFPA 96 technical committees as well as a principal member of the International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association technical committee.
Kevin Hall, M.Eng., P.E., ET, CWBSP, PMSFPE, is the director of engineering for the American Fire Sprinkler Association. He is a member of several National Fire Protection Association technical committees including NFPA 1, NFPA 13/13R/13D, NFPA 14, NFPA 20, NFPA 25, NFPA 101/5000 and NFPA 200. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Engineering degrees from the University of Maryland College Park in fire protection engineering. He is a registered professional engineer, NICET III certified in water-based system layout, a certified water-based system professional through NFPA, and a professional member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers.
