Presented on September 22, 2021.
The course will create a better understanding of
the danger of vertically migrating smoke in multi-story building elevators and
how building codes in the United States have evolved to address this threat to
building occupants and concerns of emergency responders. Throughout this
presentation we will illustrate product applications, both prescriptive and
performance-based, commercially available to address this condition at the
elevator opening.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the behavior of fire and smoke in a mid- or high-rise building.
- Understand current building codes as they relate to smoke migration in a fire and the effect of smoke migration on the means of egress via elevator lobbies in the event of fire.
- Outline design options that comply with building code requirements for egress planning.
- Describe the code sections that allow gasketing systems at the elevator opening.
