Live Member Webinar: The Impact of Li-Ion Energy Storage Systems on Residential Garage Fire Dynamics

Thank you

This live web event has ended. Thank you for attending.

Description

This presentation will summarize the findings of each test series as it relates to the interests of AHJs, the fire service, and insurance industry.
In 2022, UL conducted three series of full-scale tests with mockup residential energy storage systems in residential garage structures to address concerns from authorities having jurisdiction, the insurance industry, and the fire service. The first test series includes full-scale two-car garage structure experiments conducted under laboratory conditions to examine the impact of battery involvement in compartment fire behavior and response to firefighter ventilation operations. The second and third test series developed data to understand the relationship between battery gas releases and the resultant deflagration hazards to typical residential garage structures and first responders.

Contributors

  • Adam Barowy

A Research Engineer within the UL Fire Research and Development group and a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff, Adam develops and implements UL Standards. He also conducts custom fire testing from bench-scale to large-scale to support new product fire safety evaluations at UL. Adam is currently testing lithium-ion products, continuing the development of UL 9540A and advancing large-scale fire and explosion testing of ESS. Prior to UL, Adam worked in the Fire Fighting Technology Group at NIST where he developed data from full-scale fire experiments of acquired structures to enable improved firefighting tactics, reconstructed line of duty death/injury fire incidents, and evaluated PPE technology. Adam earned an MSFPE from WPI and volunteered for Amherst Fire Department while pursuing his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at UMass
