Premium Webinar Series: Mass Timber Structures (2022)

All live webinars in the series are recorded and provided on-demand for later viewing.

1) May 19, 2022; 12:00 - 1:00 PM EDT

Speaker: Jason Smart, PE
Presentation Title: Codes and Adoptions

The webinar will outline the new code requirements in the US model building codes pertaining to mass timber construction. Delineation between light frame, heavy timber, and mass timber construction will be provided with a focus on the new construction types for mass timber, Types IV A, B and C. The presentation will also outline the reference standards applicable to those code provisions (NDS, FDS, PRG-320) and discuss the adoption of these mass timber code provisions in various jurisdictions throughout the US.

2) May 26, 2022; 4:00 - 5:00 PM EDT

Speaker: David Barber
Presentation Title: Application of codes and research (case studies)

This presentation will outline how the prescriptive code changes have helped adoption of mass timber structures as demonstrated through the increasing number of mass timber buildings approved and built. Additionally, the presentation will address how research and fire testing carried out in the US, Canada and globally can be applied as engineering solutions when the prescriptive code is not an option. Specific building case studies will be covered.

3) June 2, 2022; 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM EDT

Speaker: Laura Hasburgh, PhD, PE
Presentation Title: Research in support of code provisions

This presentation discusses the extensive fire research conducted to address knowledge gaps related to the performance of mass timber buildings under fire conditions. From full-scale fire tests to standard tests, this presentation will cover the experimental protocols and results from six influential test series. These research results ultimately demonstrated the viability of tall wood buildings and, through defined safety benchmarks, lead to the adoption of mass timber into the model building codes and changes to prescriptive requirements.
