Premium Webinar Series: Passive Fire Protection (2022)

Fire safety is achieved through a balanced design approach comprised of both active and passive systems.  The Passive Fire Protection series will give an introduction to the fundamentals, products and relationship of passive systems to fire protection. It then discusses the codes and standards specifically for fire and smoke protection. And finally covers the application of design to passive fire protection using examples of multiple constructions and presenting testing data.

1)Tuesday, June 28, 2022, 12-1:30 p.m. EDT.

Speaker: Matthew Schumann
Presentation Title: Introduction to the Fundamentals

This presentation is an introduction to the various products and materials which are relied upon as passive fire protection products and the relationship of these products within the broader comprehensive fire protection approach embraced by building codes and installation standards.

2)Thursday, June 30, 2022, 12-1:30 p.m. EDT.

Speaker: Shamim Rashid-Sumar
Presentation Title: A Codes and Standards Perspective

This webinar will discuss the role of codes and standards in passive fire protection. The presentation will specifically examine the provisions for fire and smoke protection in international building and fire codes and referenced standards. The relationship between the use or occupancy of a building and the relevant code requirements will be explored in the context of how the building codes and standards work to provide a balanced approach to fire safety.

3) Tuesday, July 14, 2022, 12-1:30 p.m. EDT

Speaker: Arthur Parker
Presentation Title: Design Application

This presentation will review practical design applications of various passive fire protection systems commonly encountered in building construction. Passive systems to be discussed in this presentation will include structural steel protection methods, fire-resistance rated assemblies, wood construction, concrete construction, and high temperature insulation materials. Examples of the use and application of these passive systems will be reviewed using information from the SFPE Handbook. Lastly the presentation will present how testing data and design listings for passive systems are incorporated into practical use and design applications.
