This presentation reviews obstacles to obtaining reproductive
healthcare in the US in 2021 and explores the key role of internists in the
education of future clinicians, provision of services, and advocacy for
patients’ access to care. Faculty with national involvement in health care
delivery and women’s health education, including reproductive health, will
review evidence-based national guidelines encompassing reproductive healthcare
such as WPSI, USPSTF, and ACOG.
Topics covered include a breadth of reproductive and family
planning services, with particular attention to contraception. As the
guidelines are reviewed, barriers to access will be presented, including the
impact of costs, social determinants of health, insurance, and current
law/policy. In addition to these longer-term issues, presenters will discuss
the newer effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on these issues, which include
worsening disparities and access, and introduce and describe various methods to
address these barriers both individually and more broadly, advocating with
other key medical organizations and federal partners for policy changes and
additional resources. This session is sponsored by the SGIM Women and Medicine
Commission.
