Stigma generated and reinforced by healthcare practitioners results in humiliation, reduced access to care, and ultimately fuels the cycle of addiction for people with substance use disorders (SUD). Stigmatizing perceptions related to people with SUD are reinforced in medical education, revealing the “hidden curriculum” of negative bias against this vulnerable population.
This presentation explores the stigma and how it reinforces inadequate systems of care for people with substance use disorders. Participants will learn about the role of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination in creating stigma and the historical context of stigma on substance use disorders will be placed within a health equity framework. Participants will learn actionable steps they can take to dismantle stigma within one’s practice, including how to use patient-first recovery-centered language and the importance of sharing patient stories and advocacy. This presentation will be guided by the experience of the presenters in creating the REset Stigma Educational Tools (ReSET).
