This symposium, Developing Master Adaptive Learners and the Growth Mindset in the Learning and Working Enviroment: Creating a Dynamic and Resilient Workforce, was originally delivered at the SGIM22 annual meeting in Orlando (April 2022) and re-recorded April/May 2020.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the role of the master adaptive learner model to developing a resiliant and dynamic workforce
  • Compare and contrast a fixed vs growth mindset at the UME, GME and faculty levels
  • Recognize effective use and transition of the growth mindset in medical education at all levels and faculty promotion
  • Develop systemic actions required to promote a shift in the clinical and educational environment to that of a growth mindset
In a rapidly changing 21st century healthcare system, physicians require unique skills and values to succeed.  A master adaptive learner is one with insight and self-regulation to problem-solve and continuously set new learning goals to create an expert pracitce of life-long learning, essenially, they coach themselves.

The traditional clinical learning environment has adopted direct observation and feedback, it has not yet fully embraced a culture coaching with deliberate practice through a growth mindset.  This form of meritocracy equates the process of learning to imperfection or failrure which not only halts insight but creates a fixed mindset due to negative perceptions of constructive feedback.

In this session, presenters anaylize critical opportunities within our medical education system and clinical working environments to shift our culture to a growth mindset.  Presenters hope to shift how faculty and leadership think about our current clinical learning and working environments to invest in systemic changes.  They will highlight areas throughout the lifecycle of a physician allowing for revitalization of the learning and working environment and promoting lifelong learning through a growth mindset.
