This symposium, Trauma Informed Care: A Revolution to Improve Care, Learner and Provider Wellbeing, and Address Disparities, was originally delivered at the SGIM22 annual meeting in Orlando (April 2022) and re-recorded April/May 2022.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences and other forms of adversity/structural violence among patients, medical students and practicing physicians
  • Describe the impact of adversity on patient engagement in care, medical student engagement in the educational process, and physician engagement in the healthcare context
  • Demonstrate how to minimize retraumatization and optimize engagement for patients, learners, and clinicals
  • Propose trauma-infomed systems changes to optimize both healthcare and learning environments
The field of trauma-informed care continues to evolve alongside increasin understanding of the profound health effects of post-traumatic stress disorder and intimate partner violence.  As we learn more about the neurobiological mechanisms linking adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and poor health outcomes, we are developing greater appreciation for the ways in which these exposures intersect with community and historical traumas including adversities related to racism, sexism, heterosexism, xenophobia and other forms of oppression to impede health.

This session begins with a brief review of neurobiological mechanisms underlying trauma-related symptoms and health conditions and describe basic principles of trauma-infomed care (TIC) using a framework developed by SAMHSA. Three case-based scenarios will illustrate how TIC principles can be applied to enhance patient engagement in care, learner engagement in the educational process, and clinician engagement in the healthcare context.
