This symposium, Integrating the Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Model in Medicine to Promote Whole Person Care and Health Equity, was originally presented at the SGIM22 annual meeting in Orlando (April 2022).  

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify, respect and care about patient differences, values, preferences, and expressed needs by learning about the Biopsychosocial-Spirtual model and Spirituality.
  • Identify a spiritual assessment toolk to facilitate patient-physician communication
  • List three methods to integrate the model into everyday clinical practice in order to advocate for patient wellness, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and resilience
  • Demonstrate three evidence-based strategies for providing Whole Person Care thus enhancing their professionalism by demonstrating sensitivity in caring for a diverse patient population
Spirtuality has been shown to improve patient outcomes, including reducing depression and improving copying with stress and illness.  Physicians can discover how spirtuality promotes Whole Person Care and helath equity when integrated into medicine.

For those in underserved communities and culturally diverse communities, spirituality can be a soure of resilience as they enounter barriers to care, psychosocial stressors, and social injustices.  Addressing spirituality can promote health equity when integrating into medical care.  Integrating the Biopsychosocial-Spiritual model provies an evidence-based approach to provide whole person care.  National and global guidelines have been developed for integrating interprofessional spiritual care in the healthcare setting.  By integrating spiritual care into clinical care, the generalist can be better able to promote health equity by understanding the important role that spirituality has to play in the health, mental health, well-being and resulience of a culturally diverse patient popultion in navigating challenging times during the pandemic and beyond.
