Course description
Climate change and health inequities share similar root causes. The conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and play, profoundly affect health, and drive health disparities. Children, communities of lower socioeconomic status, and communities of color disproportionately experience negative health impacts of climate change and have fewer available resources to adapt to the changing climate. This is a 'double injustice' in that those who have contributed the least to climate change are the most at risk to climate threats and often have the fewest resources to adapt to and mitigate these dangers. Physicians and the healthcare community need to address climate change in order to protect those experiencing health inequities and vulnerability to climate-related health impacts. Well-designed Climate Solutions will also be health and equity solutions.
Learning Objectives
• Describe Climate Justice and Climate Apartheid and how climate change already has and will continue to disproportionately adversely affect poor and vulnerable communities primarily in the US.
• Describe how climate change is an additional risk factor for exacerbating chronic disease
• Illustrate the ways in which climate justice material can be incorporated into the curriculum of trainees.
• Describe the role of medical students as leaders in education and advocacy (MFSF - Med Students for a Sustainable Future)
• Provide resources for education, research and advocacy.
• Describe how climate change is an additional risk factor for exacerbating chronic disease
