Course description
With the overturn of Roe v. Wade, patients in states with restricted access to abortion will seek out-of-state or self-managed abortions, and patients in all states will experience increased wait times for abortion care. As abortion services
are time-sensitive, primary care physicians must be prepared to facilitate and expedite needed care.
Learning Objectives
The goal of this content is to provide primary care physicians (PCPs) with the skills to counsel patients before and following abortion care. The presenters will provide resources to overcome geographic, financial, and testing barriers to
abortion access, and skills to assess patient preferences, eligibility for abortion, and to discuss expected symptoms and contraceptive options following an abortion.
Any PCP who cares for pregnancy-capable patients will have patients who have had or will need an abortion. Internal medicine training, however, does not typically include abortion care. While not all PCPs will have the resources and training to prescribe medication abortion, all PCPs can facilitate pre- and post-abortion care. This content will help fill the training gap for PCPs to provide pre- and post-abortion care.
