Carrying the Burden: Counselors of Color’s Experiences of Microaggressions in Counseling

Description: This article provides a secondary analysis using a phenomenological research method on how counselors of color responded to clients' microaggresive behaviors. Themes that were identified in this data set included: (a) buffering and bracing for racial microagreesion, (b) experiencing the intrusions of racial microaggressions, and (c) strategizing and responding in session. The authors apply the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies to their findings as a framework for considering practice and training implications.


Susan F. Branco, PhD
Susan Branco is a licensed professional counselor in Virginia and Maryland. She is an approved supervisor in Maryland, a nationally certified counselor, and an approved clinical supervisor. Branco earned her BA in human services and MA in rehabilitation counseling from the George Washington University. She earned a doctorate in counselor education and supervision from Virginia Tech. For 14 years, she maintained an independent clinical practice specializing in working with adults, children, and families connected to adoption and foster care. In addition, she has professional experience working in community mental health and prenatal care clinics as well as with immigrant populations. She utilizes attachment theory, family systems, and trauma-informed approaches in her clinical practice. Branco served in brick-and-mortar institutions as a clinical assistant professor overseeing a mental health counseling training clinic, a director of clinical training, and a department chair prior to her role as core faculty/clinical training director at Counseling@Northwestern. Her research interests examine how school and clinical mental health counselors work with persons adopted transracially and clinical supervision practices with counselors of color. She has several peer-reviewed publications related to her research. She is a 2014 National Board for Certified Counselors Minority Fellowship Program Fellow and is a member of the Minority Fellowship Program Advisory Council. She was awarded the 2019 Bridging the Gap Award for Excellence in Counselor Education and Supervision by the National Board for Certified Counselors Foundation. Finally, Branco is a member of the American Counseling Association and serves as co-chair for the Bylaws Committee. She is a division member of the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development, the International Association for Marriage and Family Counselor, and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. Branco also belongs to the District of Columbia and Maryland Counseling Associations and serves as treasurer to the Maryland Association of Marriage, Couples, and Family Counselors.


Hannah B. Bayne, PhD
My research interests are united by a personal and professional interest in understanding the experience of another person, including how counselors can effectively and competently work with clients across cultural divides (particularly those of race/ethnicity and sexual identity). My main line of research thus pertains to empathy conceptualization, assessment, training, and utility in therapy. My work so far has laid a foundation through qualitative methods (Bayne, Neukrug, Hays, & Britton, 2013), exploratory factor analysis (Bayne & Hays, 2017), the formulation of a new scale of empathic accuracy (Bayne, under review), and case studies from my own teaching and professional counseling practice (Bayne & Jangha, 2016). I plan to continue this research agenda through applied research methods; specifically, I am interested in exploring modalities of empathy training, as well as the impact of empathy on therapeutic outcomes. My research aims to address limitations of previous empathy research, with a specific focus on empathy as a skill for cultural competency and effectiveness across varied counselor and client identities. Other related research interests include exploration of various components of racial and cultural diversity as well as integration of religion and spiritualty in counseling (Bayne, Horton-Parker, & Ward, 2014; Shaw, Bayne & Lorelle, 2012), with a specific focus on assisting LGBTQ individuals to integrate religious and spiritual identities while processing religiously connected traumas and discrimination (Bayne, 2016). I am also interested in exploring how counselors with personal religious value conflicts can work competently and affirmatively with LGBTQ clients (Bayne, Conley, & Neuer Colburn, In press). In addition, I am interested in the topic of racial and cultural broaching in counseling, as it relates to White counselor racial development and acknowledgement of race and privilege, as well as counselor of color experiences working with White clients (Bayne & Branco, In press). In both of these areas my focus is on how counselors can work across lines of historical and current systemic oppression and privilege to competently work with clients who are different. Finally, I am engaged in work related to political identities and the impact of political differences on interpersonal relationships. This research focuses on ideological differences and values conflicts at a time of increasing interpersonal divide along political identities. From a practical standpoint, we are interested in how counselors can work with clients who are experiencing politically-linked personal or interpersonal conflicts, with implications for counseling interventions as well as managing the counselor’s own potential values conflicts.
