How can you protect yourself from unwanted data leaks? This workshop provides you with some tips and tools to help you in your daily digital dive.

  • Learn about free software that is more privacy minded by its developers,
  • Learn strategies for developing privacy minded policies at your institution,

We encourage you to take these tips and tools back to your library or information center to aid your patrons with their digital immersion questions and to help protect their data in the ways you can.

  • Dr. Jessica Vitak

    Dr. Jessica Vitak, Associate Professor, College of Information Studies, University of Maryland. Dr. Vitak will share resources developed as part of an IMLS grant on the privacy and security challenges faced by public library staff and the families they serve. Resources for library staff include training material to help staff consider and respond to patron privacy needs; teaching moments that library staff can use in everyday staff-patron interactions; and a privacy policy framework to provide guidance on data privacy policies libraries may want to adopt. In addition, she'll share resources aimed at helping children, staff, and families develop privacy and security literacy, including a password-focused card game, a digital escape room, and a choose-your-own-adventure story.   • Rory Mir

    Rory Mir from the Electronic Frontier Foundation is a Grassroots Advocacy Organizer primarily working on the Electronic Frontier Alliance. While the digital security risks we face are always evolving, developing a resilient threat modeling process is the cornerstone of security practices. Cutting through the "what if's?", this process of inquiry helps groups set priorities and find sustainable remedies. This workshop will not just take you through the threat modeling process, but also offer specific methods of risk mitigation and strategies for discussing digital security with peers.

  • Michael McMahon

    Michael McMahon has been a privacy advocate for years, and currently works as the web developer at the Free Software Foundation (FSF). The Free Software Foundation is a nonprofit with a worldwide mission to promote computer user freedom. In this talk, Michael will share an introduction to cybersecurity threat assessments, and present concrete steps that can be taken to increase the privacy and security of everyday computer usage. Topics will include levels of protection, operating systems, handling passwords, customizing web browsers, and Internet communication. You will be encouraged to push back against bulk surveillance by replacing proprietary products with free software, and to share the tips you will learn in this talk with your staff and communities.

  • William Marden

    Bill Marden is currently the Director of Privacy and Compliance at The New York Public Library, a position which has held since 2015 when NYPL became the first library in the U.S. to appoint a full time privacy officer. Before NYPL, Bill spent 15 years leading senior-level policy, regulatory, and compliance projects at some of the world’s leading financial institutions including Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, and UBS. Prior to his time in the financial world, Bill was a librarian in both the public and private sectors, including six years as books and manuscripts curator for the Frederick R. Koch Foundation, now housed at Yale's Beinecke Library, and at the Pierpont Morgan Library. He earned his MLS degree from Columbia University in 1988. A Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) and the former chair of the ALA-IFC Privacy Subcommittee, Bill has lectured nationally on library data privacy and security. Most recently, he was a featured guest on the series "Profiles in Privacy" in which he discussed issues of library privacy with the president of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). In addition to his full-time job at NYPL, Bill is currently completing his J.D. degree at the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law. Bill's LinkedIn profile can be found here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/wmarden/.

  • Tracy Z. Maleeff

    Tracy Z. Maleeff (aka InfoSecSherpa) is a Security Researcher with the Krebs Stamos Group. She previously held the roles of Information Security Analyst at The New York Times Company and a Cyber Analyst for GlaxoSmithKline. Prior to joining the Information Security field, Tracy worked as a librarian in academic, corporate, and law firm libraries. She holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh in addition to undergraduate degrees from both Temple University and the Pennsylvania State University. While a member of the Special Libraries Association, Tracy received the Dow Jones Innovate Award, the Wolters Kluwer Law & Business Innovations in Law Librarianship award and was named a Fellow. Tracy has been featured in the Tribe of Hackers: Cybersecurity Advice and Tribe of Hackers: Leadership books. She also received the Women in Security Leadership Award from the Information Systems Security Association. Tracy publishes a daily Information Security & Privacy newsletter and maintains an Open Source Intelligence and industry news blog on Medium. She is a native of the Philadelphia area.
