    On this week's webinar we will define social emotional learning and look at the connections between breakfast in the classroom. Panel members will describe the positive impact of nutrition on social emotional learning (SEL), what was learned from a study and from personal experiences. We hope that you will share your stories of how Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) made a difference in the SEL for your students.

    Successful completion of the webinar and quiz is awarded 1 SNA CEU, or 1 CPEU for RDNs/NDTRs.

    1. Describe the elements of social-emotional learning.
    2. Describe challenges and potential solutions to supporting SEL through BIC.
    3. Discuss the benefits of eating breakfast as it relates to social emotional learning and the role of school meal programs in that learning.

    Contributors

    • Bonnie Cullison

      Bonnie Cullison retired from after years of teaching in 2009 and came to work at the NEA Foundation to implement the Institute for Innovation in Teaching and Learning program and support the Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom program.

      She works with joint union-district teams on how to design and implement authentic educational reform. Bonnie is a career special education teacher and teacher union activist. Trained as a speech pathologist, she taught students with moderate-to-severe language disabilities for 23 years. She served as president of the Montgomery County Education Association, Maryland with over 11,000 members from 2003-2009. Bonnie retired from Montgomery County Public Schools in February 2010. In November 2010, Bonnie was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates, so she now serves a broad community of constituents and addresses education and health issues specifically at the state level, as well as all other aspects of government.


    • Brandon Stratford

      Brandon Stratford, Ph.D., is a Deputy Program Area Director in the Education research area at Child Trends. Dr. Stratford brings a strong background in youth mental health, as well as experience with evidence-based interventions to improve outcomes for vulnerable youth. He has worked as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in community and school settings in the District of Columbia since 2005.

      As a clinician, he has provided therapy and case management services to English- and Spanish-speaking adolescents and their families in urban areas. Since joining Child Trends, Dr. Stratford has worked on several youth development projects, including comprehensive literature reviews related to children’s mental health, youth violence prevention, and family-based interventions for homeless youth. He also contributed to a report summarizing scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of school-based interventions to address non-academic barriers to learning.
