December 2020 through March 2021 brought a flurry of reports, inquiries, presidential directives and media reports that further illustrate the fact this regulatory compliance area is far from settled. Additionally, we are seeing reports from other areas of the globe that evidence this is not just an issue for the US research enterprise. The MITRE Corporation report introduced the term "improper influence" - encompassing all of the threats to research security and integrity and that term seems to be gaining acceptance.
