Budget regulations for Federal grants can be difficult to navigate if new to the profession of Research Administration. The overall goal of this presentation is to introduce the main budget categories allowed for a Federal grant application and how to calculate a budget as it pertains to Modified Total Direct Costs.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand allowable and unallowable costs on Federal Grants.
  2. Calculate a draft budget using the Modified Total Direct Costs formula.

    Ms. Carly Pigg currently has thirteen years of experience working with grants and is a Certified Research Administrator. She has managed several federal and state level grants for two different higher education institutions. The portfolio managed is approximately $2.3 million. She is familiar with the application process for federal grants and was successful in acquiring a $2.7 million grant from the Department of Labor for Nunez Community College in Chalmette, LA in fall 2012. At Louisiana State University Health New Orleans, she has managed several state and federal grants that include Louisiana Board of Regents Traditional Enhancement Grants, a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Agency Practitioner Education grant, Health Resources and Service Administration (HRSA) Advanced Nursing Education Workforce grant, two separate Advanced Nursing Education grants, two separate Nursing Education, Practice, Quality, and Retention grants, annual traineeships for the Nurse Anesthesia and Family Nurse Practitioner Programs, a Nurse Faculty Loan Program and one Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program.
