03.31.22 | FREE: Self-Management of Career and Retirement: Issues of Competence and Dyscompetence

This FREE iSession has been sponsored by CUNY. Gold Sponsor of SRAI.

The opportunity to continue to work beyond what was considered the perceived normative retirement age of 65 has been evolving. More individuals are continuing full time work or part time work in the same career, in a new career, or in a bridge job before retirement. Many people continue to perform well and continue to work and others choose a planned retirement. Others may no longer be able to perform at an acceptable level and continue to work in some altered capacity, either with different responsibilities or in a new role elsewhere. Maintaining competence is the key determinant of performance success. Nonperformance may be the reason a person needs to stop working, to choose less demanding employment or to retire.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand and define competence and dyscompetence.
  2. List the different ways older workers are defined.
  3. Understand strategies for maintaining productivity across the lifespan.
