The Chemistry and Function of Lubricant Additives

This presentation will provide an overview of the key additive types used to formulate a wide range of industrial lubricants, engine oils and greases. The types of additives discussed will include dispersants, detergents, viscosity modifiers, pour point depressants, antioxidants, corrosion and rust inhibitors, anti-wear and extreme pressure additives, and friction modifiers. The chemistry of these additives will be presented as well as an explanation on their mechanism of function in lubricants. Additional attributes of formulating finished lubricants by using various combinations of these additives will be discussed including additive selection criteria, synergistic and antagonistic effects of specific additive combinations, possible harmful properties of certain additive types and mutli-functional additives. Finally a general understanding of the types of additives used in different lubricant types will be presented.
