Salvage and Marine Firefighting for First Responders

Course Overview
Salvage and marine firefighting presents unique challenges that demand specialized knowledge, skills, and tactics. For first responders, understanding these challenges can mean the difference between a successful response and a catastrophic event.

When hazardous materials are involved, initial actions are critical to ensure the safety of those at risk of exposure. Actions should be implemented to establish protective measures and prevent potential exposure to hazardous chemicals. These actions include isolation from hazardous liquids, gases, and solids— and include staying upwind, uphill, and upstream from the release. Some of these strategies may be more challenging to implement in the maritime environment.

Responding to a ship fire is not simply another fire call. It is an all-hazards response, incorporating elements of HAZMAT, confined space entry, technical rescue, and much more. When land-based firefighters respond to a maritime incident, they must adapt their tactics due to the unique hazards of shipboard fires.
