In this webinar, we will zoom in on a country case study: the Philippines approach to cancer financing, in light of recent health systems reforms. In particular, we will explore the role of advocacy in these reforms and try to draw key takeaways that advocates may consider for application within their national context.

Dr Geminn Louis (Gelo) C. Apostol
Dr. Gelo Apostol is a physician, educator, and researcher specializing in Environmental Public Health and Climate-Resilient Health Systems. He currently serves as a technical advisor to the Philippine Inter-Agency Committee on Environmental Health (IACEH) where he helps convene governments, academia, civil society, and the private sector towards generating evidence, developing policies, and operationalizing programs for environmental protection and public health promotion. Over the past decade, Dr. Apostol has led and and served as a consultant to various national, regional, and international initiatives— from developing the Philippines’ national policy framework on environmental health, building evidence on the impact of climate change on infectious diseases, modernizing pollution control strategies, and raising public awareness on environmental toxicants. Recently, he led the team that developed the Philippine National Environmental Health Action Plan 2023-2030 (NEHAP 2030). Dr. Apostol received his double degree in Doctor of Medicine and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health and Ateneo Graduate School of Business (Class Valedictorian, Batch 2016). He is an Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity at George Washington University, an Environment and Sustainable Development fellow of the US Department of Statr, and a scholar and Post-Graduate fellow at Murdoch University - Australia, specializing in One Health.
