Blockchain: New Risk to Higher Education?

Blockchain, the digital technology behind Bitcoin, is a form of a distributed general ledger, operated by a peer-to-peer network of users. While the technology is new, other applications are being identified. Change may not be imminent but understanding what might be coming will help risk managers begin to prepare. This webinar will discuss how blockchain could impact colleges and universities. Because many URMIA members are responsible for their institution’s insurance programs, the webinar will also discuss how blockchain may bear on the insurance industry.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand at a high level what blockchain is.
  • Identify areas of higher education operations that my take advantage of blockchain such as confirmation of education credentials.
  • Discuss how blockchain might affect insurance company operations and insurance purchased by colleges and universities.

    Mr. Boyum serves as a Managing Director and National Leader of Aon’s Technology and communications Industry Practice. This industry practice serves more than 1,400 clients representing over $1 billion in annual premiums. The ARS U.S. Technology Practice is one of our largest and fastest growing industry groups. In this role, Mr. Boyum leads Aon’s research, strategy and alignment of Aon core competencies in risk, health talent and retirement to meet the current and future needs of technology companies.

    In 2016, Mr. Boyum was appointed to Aon’s Enterprise Analytics Network focused on identifying and leveraging emerging technologies that can be used to help Aon and its clients better understand and manage their risks in more effective and efficient ways. As a part of this appointment he represents Aon Risk Solutions US at the Plug and Play start-up ecosystem. Aon is the first insurance brokerage firm in the world to become an anchor partner with Plug and Play.

    Over 20+ years with Aon, Mr. Boyum has amassed considerable experience in executive liability program development and claim resolutions, primarily in the technology and telecommunications, life science, and retail sectors.

    Mr. Boyum for most of his career has specialized in executive liability coverages including Directors and Officers Liability, Employment Practices Liability, Wage and Hour, Fiduciary Liability, and Fidelity Insurances.

    Prior to Mr. Boyum’s engagement with Aon he spent 5 years in brokerage positions in the San Francisco Bay area working with Technology clients.

    Mr. Boyum holds a B.S. in Business Finance with an Emphasis in Risk and Insurance from the University of Wisconsin – LaCrosse.

    In 2014, Mr. Boyum was recognized as a Power Broker by Risk and Insurance Magazine.

  • Glenn Klinksiek, CPCU, ARM, MBA, DRM, Resource and Education Manager, URMIA

    For 25 years, Glenn headed the University of Chicago’s risk management function, retiring in 2012 as its AVP for risk management and audit. His responsibilities included directing the university's risk management and safety programs for the education, research, and healthcare enterprises. He managed its insurance and self-insurance programs; oversaw the university safety programs including laboratory, occupational, fire and life, vehicle, and radiation and environmental; maintained the emergency preparedness plan; managed its risk-based internal audit program; managed the compliance hotline and investigations; and staffed the university’s compliance committee. Mr. Klinksiek holds a BS from the University of Wisconsin and an MBA from Indiana University.
