Learning Objectives:

Scenario Role Play: Communication and Empathy
  • Utilize scenario role play as an effective dynamic skill development tool to enhance learning and behavioral retention beyond the instructional venue
  • Educate pathologists to communicate effectively and empathetically in their roles as providers on health care teams and interventionalists at the patient interface through the medium of role play which is considered the technique of choice in terms of return on investment of training time and energy
  • Utilize role play to cultivate empathic communication in a transparent culture of error identification, root cause analysis, disclosure and apology in all facets of anatomic pathology and cytopathology analysis 

The Case for Quality and Patient Safety
  • Understand how quality and patient safety measures must be integrated into all phases of testing in anatomic pathology and cytopathology
  • Educate pathologists to communicate effectively and empathetically in their roles as providers on health care teams and interventionalists at the patient interface
  • Cultivate a culture of transparency for error identification root cause analysis, disclosure and apology in all facets of anatomic pathology and cytopathology analysis in pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases
