SC54 Part 1 - Practical Informatics Solutions for Anatomic Pathology Quality Management

All Anatomic Pathology practices are faced with performing Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Improvement (QI) programs to monitor the effectiveness and outcomes of their anatomic processes. The success of these programs has been hampered by the usually sporadic and very labor intensive process of manual entry, extraction and analysis of data elements. The arduous nature of this process limits the scope of issues monitored and causes significant time delay between actual errors and the process of detecting and correcting these problems.
This course is designed for pathologists, pathologists-in-training, cytotechnologists and laboratory managers with interest in modern Informatics techniques that can transform this process to an automated, real-time process of comprehensive, continuous Quality Improvement. A series of presentations will begin with an exploration of numeric and structured Anatomic Pathology data sets that can serve as the basis for measuring diagnostic testing performance. There will be practical demonstrations of how simple tools such as Microsoft Excel can be used to gain insights from the data and trends behind your practice. The next segment will show how Informatics tools can automate components of Cytopathology Quality Management including Cytotechnologist work-load recording and screening performance, diagnostic performance statistics by preparation, and required follow-up of abnormal pap results. The final segment will reveal the design of a comprehensive Informatics system for Surgical Pathology Quality Management that has been in place at Geisinger Medical Laboratories for 5 years. This system elicits employee input to improve quality oversight of hundreds of quality issues simultaneously, automates data collection and display, facilitates communications between sections and shifts for real-time problem resolution, and enables evidence-based allocation of quality improvement resources.
A comprehensive syllabus will be distributed at the course. After the meeting, all course registrants will have access to the PowerPoint presented at the Annual Meeting along with the text portion of the syllabus on the USCAP website.
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
  • Leverage common numeric and structured data sets for their Anatomic Pathology Quality Management program
  • Understand how the application of informatics can save time and labor, and meet the regulatory demands of Cytopathology Quality Management
  • Recognize the opportunity that Informatics tools offer to detect and resolve a broad scope of quality issues in real-time for comprehensive, continuous quality improvement in Anatomic Pathology.
