The promise of personalized medicine has been upon us for years. This course addresses the impact of genomic medicine on patient management, and redefining the role of the pathologist from a diagnostic specialist to a decision maker in the era of personalized medicine. This course is designed for practicing pathologists, molecular lab directors, basic scientists, and pathologists-in-training. The course will be in the form of four presentations that will discuss the impact of genomics on patient care, the phases of implementation and challenges that face the transition into precision medicine, including ethical, QC and training issues. We will focus on the real-life examples of molecular testing. Each presentation will be followed by an open discussion. A syllabus reviewing each of the topics, in addition to relevant review articles and a comprehensive reference list will be available online prior to the meeting. All course registrants will also receive web access to the PowerPoint presented at the USCAP Annual Meeting after the meeting.
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to understand:
- The concept of genomic medicine and its scope of applications and impact on cancer management
- The basic principles of the most commonly used tools for molecular profiling and their applications, advantages and limitations,
- Challenges that need to be addressed in moving into personalized medicine.
