Description

The management of glaucoma patients can be challenging, considering that chronic, long-term nature of the condition. As clinicians, our focus often centers on the evidence of perfect adherence to our prescribed therapeutic regimens, as evidenced by stabilization of clinical metrics such as intraocular pressure, perimetry, and objective measures of optic nerve contour and nerve fiber thickness. However, what is often missing is an appreciation of nonclinical factors that our patients experience in their daily lives. This panel will provide evidence that the choices that our patients make and other factors that may be out of their matter when managing glaucoma.

  • Louis R. Pasquale, MD, FARVO

Affiliation: Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School

Areas of Interest: I am principal investigator on NIH-funded research employing hypothesis-driven epidemiological methods to: a) gain insight into why IOP increases in POAG and b) discover novel factors making the optic nerve vulnerable to degeneration in POAG. For example, my study of the relation between type 2 diabetes mellitus and POAG suggests factors producing insulin resistance may contribute to elevated IOP. My work in genetic epidemiology has generated case-control groups nested within population-based cohorts (the Nurses’ Health Study; the Health Professionals Follow-up Study and the Women’s Genome Health Study) consisting of incident POAG cases with completed high-throughput genotyping to 1.5 million markers linked to repeated, validated environmental exposure information. My long-term goal is use this resource to identify the full complement of genes, gene-gene and gene-environment interactions associated with open-angle glaucoma.
