Description

Identifying glaucoma progression is one of the most important, yet challenging aspects of glaucoma management. This symposium provides a comprehensive overview of these challenges and potential practical solutions from diagnostic techniques such as perimetry and imaging of the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fibre layer. Finally, an overview on the lessons learnt from the clinical trials in glaucoma and their translation into clinical care will be presented.

Contributors

  • Dr. Balwantray C. Chauhan

Dr. Balwantray C. Chauhan, Mathers Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences

Affiliation: Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, Canada

Research Interest: Changes in the optic nerve head and visual field in glaucoma; experimental glaucoma.

  • David (Ted) Garway-Heath

David (Ted) Garway-Heath is IGA Professor of Ophthalmology for Glaucoma & Allied Studies and Theme Leader for Visual Assessment & Imaging, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology. He is one of the five UK NIHR Senior Investigators in Ophthalmology.

His key research interests include the application of imaging & psychophysical techniques to the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, tonometry & ocular biomechanics, the consequences of vision loss on every-day function, measuring glaucoma progression, and determining risk factors for glaucoma progression. He is the principal investigator of the UK Glaucoma Treatment Study, a landmark multicentre placebo-controlled clinical trial investigating the effectiveness of IOP-lowering therapy in reducing the frequency of glaucoma progression.

Professor Garway-Heath is member of the Executive Committee of the Glaucoma Research Society (GRS), member of the Executive Board the European Glaucoma Society (EGS), Chair of the EGS Committee on Healthcare Quality & Patient Outcome Measures, Co-Chair of the EGS Scientific Committee, member of the Executive Committee of the UK & Eire Glaucoma Society, which he chaired in 2010, and Secretary to the Imaging and Perimetry Society (IPS). He is past member of the ARVO Glaucoma Section Program Committee, which he chaired in 2009, and co-chaired the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) Consensus Committee in 2007 and 2011. He is on the editorial board of several international peer-reviewed journals, including IOVS, and has authored over 130 peer-reviewed research papers. He received the Senior Clinician Scientist Research Recognition Award from the WGA in 2011.

  • Stuart L. Graham, MBBS, PhD, MS, FRANZCO

Affiliation: Professor and Head of Dept, Ophthalmology and Visual Science. ASAM, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, and Visiting Professor, Sydney University/Save Sight Institute

Areas of Interest: Glaucoma subspecialist ophthalmologist with background in electrophysiology and clinical research in glaucoma and optic neuritis. Developed objective perimetry using the multifocal VEP.

Special interests include vascular changes in glaucoma, neurodegeneration mechanisms and new MRI techniques.

  • Alfonso Antón MD PhD

Alfonso Antón MD PhD is Professor of Ophthamology at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Chairman of the Glaucoma and the Research Departments at  Institut Catalá de Retina and he is glaucoma consultant at Parc Salut Mar (Barcelona).

His interests focus on epidemiology, telemedicine, health economics, imaging devices and functional tests. He has designed and developed numerous research projects funded by the Spanish Health Research Fund (FIS) and other institutions and private companies.

Alfonso Antón has published over 40 publications and is referee of several scientific journals. He has been and is member of several international scientific and editorial committees, including the International Members Committee of ARVO, European Glaucoma Society, Spanish Glaucoma Society and the editorial board of the Journal of Glaucoma.

  • Christopher Bowd, PhD

Affiliation: Research Scientist, Hamilton Glaucoma Center, Department of Ophthalmology, University of California, San Diego, USA.

Areas of Interest: Early detection and monitoring of glaucoma, including structure/function associations and machine learning analysis of optical imaging and psychophysical test results.

Leadership Positions: Director of the Hamilton Glaucoma Center-based Visual Field Assessment Center (VisFACt) and Co-director of the Hamilton Glaucoma Center-based Imaging Data Evaluation and Analysis (IDEA) Center. Co-authored of over 125 peer-reviewed manuscripts and several book chapters, primarily related to glaucoma. Recipient of federal and private grants to apply machine-learning analysis techniques to data generated from structural and functional tests to detect glaucoma and to predict and detect glaucomatous progression, as well as federal funds to investigate electrophysiological techniques for detecting glaucoma.

  • Douglas R. Anderson , MD, FARVO

Douglas R. Anderson , MD, FARVO, is Professor emeritus of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of  Medicine.  He occupies an endowed chair in ophthalmology named for him, the Douglas R. Anderson Distinguished Chair in Ophthalmology   His laboratory research began at Washington University as a medical student..  Research continued at the National Cancer Institute, during his ophthalmology residency at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, and as a glaucoma research fellow at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary   His main laboratory interest was the mechanism of glaucomatous damage to the optic nerve, in particular axonal transport and blood flow components.   With Dr. Ralph Kirsch he characterized the clinical appearance of glaucomatous cupping,, recognized with a Gold Medal by the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1972.  He became Associate Director for the Optic Disc Reading Center of the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study..  Dr. Anderson continues to refine an understanding of the anatomic variations of optic nerve anatomy as revealed by optical coherence tomography and the anatomic changes of the optic disc in glaucoma.  In 1988, he joined Dr. Stephen Drance in leading a multicenter collaborative randomized clinical trial on Anormal-tension glaucoma@, mainly to show the pathophysiologic importance of pressure in glaucoma when the pressure is within the normal range and the value of pressure-lowering treatment.  For this work they received an International Glaucoma Review Special Recognition Award in 2002. His current interest is in quantifying progression and new imaging methods.
