Abstract: Complex schedules are often an inefficient means of communicating specific schedule issues, especially to non-experts. Creating custom Gantt charts in Microsoft Excel® is a useful alternative means of conveying schedule information because of the ubiquity of the software and the flexibility it allows in data manipulation and presentation.

Exporting schedule information into Excel® and using Visual Basic® for Applications (VBA) significantly increases the accuracy, quality and speed at which Gantt charts can be created. This paper provides a methodology for using VBA to create flexible, eye-catching Gantt charts that reference information imported from scheduling software. This method has practical application for schedulers by allowing them to communicate schedule concepts to a wider audience. Also discussed are the advantages and limitations of using this method and ideas of how to exploit the features of Excel® to further enhance Excel® based Gantt Charts.
