Aquatic Physiology of Immersion*

No Ratings

Proceed only on this course AFTER you complete the Aquatics Physics course.

Sequence to follow:
1. Aquatics Physics*
2. Aquatic Physiology of Immersion*
3. Critical Thinking and Aquatic Interventions*

This course is designed to educate the physical therapist and physical therapy assistant on those physiological changes that occur due to immersion according to both water depth and temperature. This information may assist the therapist in devising an appropriate treatment plan while recognizing those who may be physiologically at risk to participate in aquatic therapy at a given point in the rehabilitation process.

Learning Objectives

Following completion of the course, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify specific physiological responses associated with immersion in the major systems of the body including cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, musculoskeletal, nervous, and renal systems.
  2. Cite the importance of water temperature relative to each of these physiological systems.
  3. Apply specific physiological principles to explain the effects of immersion relative to predicted responses of therapeutic interventions.
  4. Cite research to support the use of aquatics to enhance therapeutic interventions relative to the physiological responses that occur to the cardiovascular, pulmonary, musculoskeletal, nervous, endocrine and renal systems.
  5. Cite the effects of immersion relative to the trained vs. sedentary individual with respect to the physiological systems.
  6. Identify normal and abnormal physiological responses associated with immersion.
  7. Identify the potential for deleterious responses due to immersion in various physical conditions when considering the use of aquatic intervention for a patient.
