Midwifery Week: Cultural Humility: A Key Ingredient For Strong and Healthy Communities

Course Description
This presentation will explore the concept of cultural humility and its importance in midwifery care. Participants will learn about the benefits of cultural humility for both midwives bad their patients, as well as the challenges of developing and practicing cultural humility. Participants will also be provided with strategies for developing and practicing cultural
humility in their own practice. This presentation is appropriate for all
midwives, regardless of their level of experience. It is also appropriate for
other healthcare professionals who are interested in learning more about
cultural humility.

Allyson Crain, DNP, CNM, WHNP-BC


Speaker Bio
Allyson Crain, DNP, CNM, WHNP-BC has practiced full-scope midwifery
for 4 years. She recently transitioned out of clinical practice to move to
The Netherlands with her husband for his military career. A military veteran
herself, Allyson has traveled the world and gained valuable knowledge and
skills in global health. She was a Pashto interpreter in the military and spent
time in Afghanistan, which helped her in her clinical practice with Afghan
Refugees. Now, Allyson owns a remote consulting and digital education
business focused on cross-cultural philosophy, respectful maternity care,
trauma-informed care, and non-violent healthcare communication &
empathy. She has developed online courses in these topics as well as spoken
to healthcare workers and organizations to teach them these skills. She
promotes these topics and midwifery on her social media channels.
